How to Keep Your Account After a Temporary Number Expires
By the TonicsTools team · · 5 min read
Activation numbers are rented for one code. Once the order ends, the number is released and you cannot receive another SMS on it. That is fine for sign up, but if the app later asks you to "confirm it's you" by text, you need a backup plan. Spend two minutes on the steps below right after verifying.
The universal checklist
- Add a recovery email you control.
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Authy), not SMS.
- Save the backup codes the app gives you, somewhere offline.
- Stay logged in on at least one device you own.
App-specific settings
Settings, Account, Two-step verification: create a PIN and add an email. Turn on chat backup.
Telegram
Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification: set a cloud password and recovery email.
Manage your Google Account, Security: add a recovery email and Google Authenticator or a passkey.
Facebook and Instagram
Accounts Center, Password and security, Two-factor authentication: choose Authentication app.
X (Twitter) and Discord
Security settings: enable an authentication app and download the backup codes.
When you need a number long term
If an account will always need SMS (some banks and payment apps), use a number you will keep, such as your own SIM. A one-time number is the wrong tool for that job.
