VoIP vs Non-VoIP Numbers: Which Works for Verification?
By the TonicsTools team · · 5 min read
When people search for a number to verify WhatsApp, PayPal or a bank app, they quickly run into the terms "VoIP" and "non-VoIP". The difference decides whether your code arrives at all.
What is a VoIP number?
A VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) number lives entirely in software. Services like Google Voice, TextNow and many free number apps hand them out. They are cheap to create in bulk, which is exactly why many platforms distrust them.
What is a non-VoIP number?
A non-VoIP number belongs to a real SIM card on a mobile network, just like your MTN or Airtel line. Lookup databases identify it as a mobile number, so services treat it like any other customer's phone.
Why apps reject VoIP numbers
Before sending a code, many apps check the number type with a carrier lookup. If it comes back as VoIP, they refuse it or silently never send the SMS. WhatsApp, Telegram, PayPal, many banks and most crypto exchanges do this.
Quick comparison
- Acceptance: non-VoIP numbers are accepted almost everywhere, VoIP numbers are often blocked.
- Price: VoIP is cheaper or free, non-VoIP costs more because a real SIM is involved.
- Privacy: both keep your personal number private. Free public VoIP numbers are not private at all, anyone can read the messages.
