SMS Verification

How to Get a Foreign Number for WhatsApp in Nigeria

By the TonicsTools team · · 3 min read

A foreign number on WhatsApp is useful for more reasons than people admit: a business line for clients in the UK or US, a separate account for online work, or simply keeping your personal MTN or Airtel number away from strangers. The good news is you do not need to travel or buy a foreign SIM card. The catch is that some methods you will read about online no longer work, and a few are risky. This guide covers what actually works from Nigeria today.

What WhatsApp needs from a number

WhatsApp only uses the number once at sign up (and again if you ever reinstall without a backup). It sends a 6-digit code by SMS, or offers a voice call. Whatever number you choose must be able to receive that code at that moment. After that, the account runs on your internet connection, not on the SIM.

That is why a temporary activation number can work: you only need it for a few minutes. It is also why you must protect the account properly afterwards, which we cover below.

Your realistic options

1. A virtual activation number (fastest)

Services like TonicsTools rent you a real mobile number from another country for a single verification. You choose WhatsApp and a country, enter the number in the app, and the code appears on your dashboard. You pay in Naira and you are refunded automatically if no SMS arrives. You can compare live prices per country on the WhatsApp number page.

Best for: getting a foreign WhatsApp line set up today without paperwork.

2. Free "US number" apps

Apps that hand out free US numbers usually give VoIP numbers. WhatsApp checks number types and often refuses VoIP ranges, so these fail more often than they work. We explain why in VoIP vs non-VoIP numbers.

3. A real foreign SIM from a friend or relative

If someone abroad can receive the code on their SIM and send it to you, that works, and the number is long term. The downside is that you depend on them whenever WhatsApp asks to verify again, and the number belongs to them.

4. Free public SMS websites

Avoid these for WhatsApp. Every message is visible to anyone, so another person can read your code and take over the account, and most of the numbers are already blocked.

Step by step with a virtual number

  1. Create an account and fund your wallet. Card, bank transfer and USSD all work in Naira.
  2. Pick WhatsApp and a country. USA, UK and Canada are popular, but any country with stock is fine. The country decides the dialling code people see, not where your account "lives".
  3. Enter the number in WhatsApp. Select the same country in the WhatsApp list and type the number without repeating the country code.
  4. Choose SMS, not a call. Activation numbers receive text messages only.
  5. Copy the code from your dashboard. It usually arrives within seconds. If it does not arrive, cancel the order and your wallet is refunded.

Our longer walkthrough, how to verify WhatsApp with a virtual number, covers each screen in detail.

Keep the account after the number expires

Activation numbers are released after about 20 minutes. That is fine for WhatsApp, as long as you do three things immediately:

  • Turn on two-step verification (Settings, Account, Two-step verification) and set a PIN you will remember.
  • Add an email address to that two-step setting so you can reset the PIN.
  • Turn on chat backup to Google Drive or iCloud.

Without these, changing phones or reinstalling WhatsApp could lock you out, because the old number cannot receive a new code. See how to keep your account after a temporary number expires.

If WhatsApp says the number is not allowed

WhatsApp sometimes rejects a number because the range has been flagged. It is not about your phone or your location. Cancel for a refund and try a different country. More fixes are in WhatsApp "number not allowed": causes and fixes.

Use it the right way

A foreign number is a tool for privacy and business. Using it to spam, impersonate someone or get around a ban breaks WhatsApp's rules and our acceptable use policy, and new accounts that behave like spam are banned quickly. Message people who expect to hear from you, and build up activity gradually.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a foreign WhatsApp number while living in Nigeria?

Yes. WhatsApp works over the internet, so the account works anywhere once it is verified. People will simply see the foreign country code.

Will I lose the WhatsApp account when the virtual number expires?

Not if you set a two-step verification PIN with an email address and keep chat backups on. Those let you move to a new phone without needing the old number.

Which country is best for a WhatsApp number?

Any country with numbers in stock works. Pick the code that suits your audience, for example a UK number for UK clients, and check live prices on the WhatsApp number page.
