Does My Phone Support eSIM? How to Check
By the TonicsTools team · · 4 min read
An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone. You download a plan instead of inserting a card. Before buying a travel eSIM, make sure your phone supports it. It takes less than a minute to check.
The fastest check
Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number in the list, your phone has eSIM hardware.
Phones that usually support eSIM
Apple
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and every newer iPhone, including SE (2nd generation and later).
- iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau often lack eSIM, except some newer models.
Samsung
- Galaxy S20 and newer, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series.
- Some mid-range A series models in recent years, but check your exact model.
- Pixel 3 and newer (Pixel 3 bought from some carriers may be locked).
Others
- Recent flagships from Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, Huawei and Sony often support eSIM, depending on the region.
- Most Tecno, Infinix and itel phones do not.
Carrier lock
Even with eSIM hardware, a phone locked to one network (common with phones bought on contract in the US or UK) will refuse other eSIMs. Ask the original carrier to unlock it before travelling.
