How to Install an eSIM on iPhone
By the TonicsTools team · · 5 min read
Installing a travel eSIM on an iPhone takes about two minutes. Do it at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, and switch it on when you land. Your Nigerian SIM stays in place for calls and bank OTPs.
Before you start
- An iPhone XS, XR or newer. Check eSIM compatibility if unsure.
- The iPhone must be carrier unlocked (phones bought outright usually are).
- A stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Your eSIM QR code from the TonicsTools dashboard or email. Display it on another screen, or keep the manual details ready.
Install with the QR code
- Open Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
- Scan the QR code shown on your other device.
- Label the new line, for example "Travel", when asked.
- Choose your Nigerian line as the default for calls and iMessage, and the Travel line for Cellular Data.
Install manually
If you cannot scan, tap Enter Details Manually on the QR screen and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your dashboard.
When you land
- Go to Settings, Cellular, tap the Travel line and turn it on.
- Turn on Data Roaming for the Travel line only.
- Turn off Data Roaming on your Nigerian line to avoid roaming charges.
Troubleshooting
- "Unable to complete cellular plan change": connect to Wi-Fi, restart the phone and try again. Each QR code can only be installed once, so contact support before deleting anything.
- No internet after landing: confirm Data Roaming is on for the eSIM and that Cellular Data is set to the eSIM line.
