Travel eSIM vs Roaming vs Local SIM: What to Use Abroad

By the TonicsTools team · · 6 min read

Every trip abroad raises the same question: how will I get online when I land? Nigerians have three realistic options. Here is how they compare on cost, convenience and keeping your Nigerian number reachable.

1. International roaming on your Nigerian SIM

You keep using your MTN, Airtel, Glo or 9mobile line abroad. It is the easiest option, nothing to install, but roaming data bundles are expensive per GB and coverage depends on partner agreements in each country.

  • Good for: very short trips, or when you need your Nigerian number for calls.
  • Watch out for: bill shock if you use data outside a bundle.

2. A local SIM card at your destination

Usually the cheapest per GB for long stays. But you need to find a shop, queue, and in many countries register the SIM with your passport. You also have to swap out your Nigerian SIM unless your phone has two slots.

  • Good for: stays of a month or more, and anyone who needs a local number.
  • Watch out for: registration rules, airport kiosk markups and losing your tiny Nigerian SIM.

3. A travel eSIM

You buy a data plan before you travel, install it at home, and it connects to a local network when you land. Your Nigerian SIM stays in the phone for calls, SMS and bank OTPs.

  • Good for: trips from a few days to a few weeks, multi-country trips with regional plans, and anyone who wants to be online at the airport.
  • Watch out for: phone compatibility (check our eSIM compatibility guide) and that most plans are data only.

Our recommendation

For most trips under a month, a travel eSIM for data plus your Nigerian SIM for OTPs is the best balance. For long stays such as study or relocation, start with an eSIM for the first weeks and switch to a local plan once you are settled.

Popular destinations: UK, USA, Canada, Dubai (UAE) and Saudi Arabia.
