Tips for using an eSIM in South Africa

  • Load shedding can affect some mobile towers. Keep a power bank and download maps offline.
  • Plans are data only in most cases. Use WhatsApp for calls.

How to set it up

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM (how to check).
  2. Buy a South Africa plan and pay from your Naira wallet.
  3. Scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you travel (iPhone or Android steps).
  4. When you land, switch the eSIM on and enable data roaming for it.

South Africa eSIM FAQ

Will the eSIM work during load shedding?

Most towers have backup power, but some areas lose signal during long outages. This affects every network, local SIMs included.

Is my phone eSIM compatible?

Most phones from 2019 onward support eSIM, including iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer. Your phone must also be carrier unlocked. On iPhone, check Settings, General, About for a "Digital SIM" or "Available SIM" entry.

When should I install the eSIM?

Install it at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before your trip, but keep it switched off. Turn it on and enable data roaming for the eSIM line after you land.

Will I lose my Nigerian number?

No. The eSIM is added as a second line. Your Nigerian SIM stays in the phone for calls, SMS and bank OTPs while the eSIM handles data.

How do I pay?

Fund your TonicsTools wallet in Naira by card, bank transfer or USSD, or with crypto, then buy the plan. The QR code is delivered to your dashboard and email.
